The film is charming and warm-hearted, much like Paddington and its sequel, and the onscreen delight is infectious.
This is a film that has been double dipped in lavish spectacle and then generously sprinkled with all the charm, silliness and wit found in Roald Dahl’s source novel.

The movie's sentimentality won over my mom and I at the theater. There wasn't a dry eye in the house at certain points in the movie. Some of the parts that were involving the antagonist characters were less interesting and seemed to drag on, but the musical bits and the main characters were absolutely lovely and memorable. Wonka made me really want to hug my mom after the movie, so I did. If you like sentimental movies about family, this is for you. If you are a heartless Scrooge, you will not enjoy it.

Without doubt the best film of 2023. It is fun, well acted, well scripted, has the right balance of humour and reality, happiness and moments of sadness. My kids loved it, my wife loved it and I am obliged to be honest, I a 16 years career soldier, loved it.
There are times that happy nostalgia, good winning and honest decency is not just a bonus, it is a life necessity. Wonka provides everything for this and much more. It is a good film, worth watching by any family and even couple looking for easy peace. It's nearly two hours which I thought was longish but when my 6 year old wriggler sits still and engrossed for the whole time, I'd say it is extremely well done. Well done writers, cast and crew.

Even though it is rather obviously trading on a familiar and beloved brand, Wonka is nevertheless a fun and imaginative family film – certainly better than one might expect from a production crassly viewed by some as a “cash grab.”
Wonka’s throwback charms make a striking enough impression, especially with Chalamet in the role, that the idea of another musical Wonka adventure isn't at all objectionable. If, that is, they skip the fat suit next time.
This is an eminently pleasant movie, propped up by its indefatigable good cheer and King’s immaculately tidy craftsmanship.
The movie is overly busy, as these kinds of eager-to-please diversions tend to be, and at two hours it overstays its welcome.
Young audiences may well be enchanted, but I’m sad to report I found the whole confection sickly sweet and hopelessly twee.
I absolutely loved it. I was totally on board when I heard the Director of Paddington was directing this. It's funny, charming, and just a great feel good movie. Anybody hating on this movie because its not like the original, needs to accept not everyone is gonna be Gene Wilder. I personally loved this Willy Wonka.

Are there problems with this movie? oh a bunch, it is obviously a cashgrab, the choices for actors do not fit well with the originals, all the songs are terrible and the whole principle just doesn't make sense, with that being said, I am still giving this movie a 5 because it is just unbelievably happy and joyous. It is not possible to leave this movie without a smile on your face. I'd say this movies great if you have a son or daughter that likes willy wonka and are prepared to just turn your brain off for a little bit. (the OG is still way better though)

Off the cuff review sitting in the theater:
Get it for free somehow, watch the first 5 minutes, then watch the original and trust you’ve dodged a bullet.
Otherwise, it failed by all accounts. It’s already set itself up for failure being a modern prequel of a classic. Totally missed the tone, themes, and character acting needed.
Hugh Grant as an oompa-loompa was the best part of the film and that’s even considering he was mocapped and is basically 95% CGI. That’s saying something.
I swear this movie is a literal joke; a SNL skit pitched by Mr Bean funded by Keegan scored by **** and acted by whomever is desperate enough for an appearance and a paycheck.
