Despite my issues with the performance, and I’m more annoyed by technical issues than most, I ended up adoring Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. It joins Monster Hunter Stories 2 as my two favorite monster collecting games. It has heart, charm, and one of the best gameplay loops in a monster collecting game. I hope we see some patches improving the performance though, because that’s the only thing holding this back.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is a wonderfully whimsical—and, at times, delightfully dark—new entry into the Dragon Quest Monsters franchise. While its graphics were more dated than I’d have liked, and I did find myself wanting a more free-roaming experience, I’d be lying if I said that I was anything but happy with how this game turned out. I truly hope that Square Enix continues putting their all into making DQM better and better with each new entry. Happy 25th Anniversary, DQM!
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is a worthy resurgence for this beloved spinoff series. While the messy narrative pacing and poor framerate bring the adventure down a few notches, the addictive and rewarding gameplay loop with player freedom at its core more than offsets those flaws. You can spend countless hours making your ideal team to your heart’s content and engaging with the post-game content after clearing the main story. Further, Dragon Quest IV fans will get more out of this journey than most, but newcomers who exhibit patience can still find themselves invested and enthralled. Ultimately, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince proves that this series can prosper, and with the promise that they’ll continue, we’re excited to see where it goes from here.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince forgoes complexity in favor of creating an accessible and enjoyable gaming experience. The basic story and one dimensional NPCs could be a turn off for those looking for a story-rich RPG, as those seeking a grand story with a complex battle system won’t find them here. Capturing and synthesizing new monsters, however, is a simple pleasure that can easily generate dozens of hours worth of enjoyment from this title. Fans of Dragon Quest IV will likely be sold on seeing an origin story for Psaro and revisiting the world of Dragon Quest IV from an alternative perspective. As a fan of Dragon Quest it was easy to overlook the shortcomings and just enjoy monster wrangling, but those less invested in Dragon Quest may be less forgiving with the basic plot and simple gameplay.
Years after the release of the previous iteration of the Monsters genre, The Dark Prince had the opportunity to modernize the historic playful formula of the spin-off and ferry it towards still unexplored lands. Despite the predictions, however, the development team seems to have almost completely given up on the idea of renewing the monster recruitment mechanics and above all the product's combat system, which appears tired and dated. Leaving aside the uncertainties of the performances, which we hope will be circumvented as soon as possible with a corrective patch, the bitterest pills are represented by the choice to make Psaro a silent protagonist and by a hasty screenplay, which in our opinion do not do justice to the dramatic story of one of the most charismatic antagonists of the entire saga. In short, the Lord of Monstrosity deserved treatment more in keeping with his worth.
While Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince offers a serviceable and sometimes fun narrative and gameplay, the overall experience is unfortunately bogged down by its performance issues and the lack of simple yet essential features.
La variedad de monstruos es enorme así como la capacidad de sintetizarlos (fusionarlos) entre ellos le da mucho juego, además todo el lore que muestra del Dragon Quest IV es una delicia para todos los que somos fans de la saga
Por ahora un juegazo
It is fun to join monsters and blend them together.
Good storyline that is an offshoot of Dracula 4.
The dungeon tricks in the latter half of the game are troublesome.
While I didn't know what to expect when I first saw the announcement of this game; I've never been the.biggest fan of Dragon Quest, and I've been even less of one of Dragon Quest Monsters. If you're anything like the RPG player I've described; this game likely won't change your mind or replace Pokémon anytime soon. Though DQIV is among the best installments of the main series and the eponymous Dark Prince Psaro among its best characters; this game doesn't reach the heights it aims for. Even with some solid monster designs and interesting mechanics (such as fusing monsters together); the game is ultimately bogged down by a cluttered interface and laggy performance (if you're on the fence about this game; I'd recommend waiting for fixes and updates). If you're looking for a monster-taming RPG outside the Pokémon wheelhouse; I'd suggest looking elsewhere for now.
For the monster hunting fans this has some good qualities and I love that some (the cut scenes only) have an English voice over. However the game isn't very deep (other than the monster mechanics). The story is mundane, the graphics are severely dated, the 3d motion at times has trouble with the environments. As a Dragon Quest fan I was looking for more. This game comes off as a low budget cash grab. Monsters hunters will find some love here but if you are looking for a top tier game this in not it.
