Rocksteady's phenomenal Arkham series needs no introduction at this stage — three of the finest superhero games you'll ever play with a top-notch cast and writing, and sublime gameplay that put you right into the bat-boots of the Dark Knight. Asylum is an all-timer, City still stands up as one of the best open-world games we've ever played and Knight, although slightly less successful, is still a strong final chapter. It's a shame that Knight is completely unplayable on Switch. Very little TLC has been shown to any of these games and better decisions weren't made when it became clear just how poorly one of the games here ran on Nintendo's console. If you only have a Switch and have never played the first two games, Batman: Arkham Trilogy is still a decent way to play those two titles, at least.
Though Arkham Trilogy on the Switch serves as an excellent excuse to dive back into Asylum and City, its Arkham Knight port is nothing short of diabolical.
Based on the reviews I thought this was going to be an unplayable mess but Asylum and City are actually really good and are just as much fun as they were on PS3. Not sure why they bothered doing Knight though.
First, let me just say that Arkham Knight is, yes, it's playable, but I would not recommend people to play it on Switch, as it has a multitude of problems that includes very noticeable and frequent stutters and frame drops (especially during Batmobile segments) that may genuinely hurt your eyes, and the graphical downgrade is really apparent. Minus 2 points for this.
Now, If you don't compare this with ports from other platforms, I would say that 2 out of the three games on here are still competent ports of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Yes, there are very few frame drops, but it's barely noticeable unless you're really looking for them. This is still quite an achievement. Graphics are ok at best, still better than what Hogwarts Legacy for Switch gave us, and these two games, especially Arkham City, remain as some of the best superhero games of all time.
Don't be discouraged just because a few people want this to run at a stable 30/60fps and PS4Pro/PC/PS5 level graphics on a 7 year old hardware.
If you haven't played the Arkham games yet, and the Switch is your only video gaming console, 2 working games out of 3 in a compilation still makes this game worth your hard-earned money.
Arkham knight is extremely broken on switch
Arkham city and Asylum have slight performance problems and are limited to 30fps on switch which is also inexcusable since they are games from 2009 and 2011 and should work correctly
As of a week after release, the game is practically unplayable. The game has slowdown, but the cutscenes stutter until they go frame by frame by frame until finally, after a couple minutes, just end and you can continue. That is for Arkham Asylum, which is the oldest and least stressful to this ancient system. The shame is that the series, even old, is epic and still holds up today on PlayStation and Xbox, but not on this archaic machine that was underpowered the day it came out.
TLDR - it is an awful port; don't buy it. Stop supporting lazy ports and publishers that don't care about the quality of their products.
While the Arkham games are usually praised for their polished gameplay and dark, atmospheric worlds, the developers failed to properly optimise this collection for Nintendo's hybrid console. Porting such demanding titles from past-gen systems would always be challenging on Switch's less powerful hardware.
More importantly, a shoddy technical experience seriously undermines the enjoyment of these story-driven, cinematic games. Constant stuttering and crashes ruin the immersion, preventing players from fully exploring Gotham City and unravelling its mysteries. I can understand the reviewer's frustration after such a botched launch.
It's a shame the first two games didn't receive more thoughtful ports since their original designs seem like a better fit for Switch capabilities. Rushed optimisations and slow textures likely damaged perceptions of these acclaimed entries. In the future, developers should take more care with ambitious ports. The Switch introduces many newcomers to iconic series, so first impressions count. If technical issues overshadow great storytelling and artistry, it loses potential fans. Even demanding games could thrive on Switch's hybrid format with patience and polish.
The underlying games deserve better than this collection currently provides. With a dedication to quality and performance, their magic could yet shine through.
