Developer Outerloop Games prides itself on the diversity of its team, and it shows with aplomb in one of the best games I’ve played all year. I completed a single playthrough of Thirsty Suitors in about 12 hours, yet felt like I had known Timber Hills and its inhabitants far longer than that. I genuinely related to Thirsty Suitors in ways I’ve never connected to a video game before and would love to revisit Jala and company in DLC or a sequel. Thirsty Suitors isn’t just a stock game with a Bollywood veneer; it’s an entity that showcases both obvious and subtle aspects of South Asian culture in the West. That, plus Thirsty Suitors’ diverse gameplay elements, harmonize to create something special that is truly more than the sum of its parts.
Good writting; Good themes; enjoyable and human characters. Scott pilgrim type game that feels great. Creative combat options considering combat not being the focus and a bombastic style that I love and wish was more common in the gaming industry. I usually hate turn based games but the feel is great especially with the quicktime events actually being used in a challanging and strong way that is uncommon among the games that use them.
easily a top contender for GOTY for me! this is like a wonderful blend of Persona-style battles, Tony Hawk skateboarding, Scott Pilgrim relationship problems, South Asian familial dynamics, with mouthwatering Sri Lankan cooking over an absolutely killer soundtrack. the art style is eye-catching and fun and the dialogue is clever and fully voiced-over which is just an exquisite addition in my opinion, truly could not ask for more in a game! I really hope the developers turn this into a series, I'll be the first in line for what comes next.
very unfortunate that user reviews are so plagued by racism, ****, transphobia, and just a general misunderstanding of turn-based battle systems.
It’s also relatively short to complete as the game only has a few Chapters, meaning you can wrap up the story in between 10-15 hours. This makes it the perfect game to pick up and play on a weekend, especially if you’re looking for something that combines simplistic and fun gameplay with a strong narrative and a quirky plot. Trust me, taking on Jala’s role of an ex-battling skater girl in the early 2000s is a wild and entertaining rollercoaster ride, sure to have you laughing along every step of the way.
While there are RPGs out there with deeper systems and more engaging mechanics, Thirsty Suitors' story more than makes up for any shortcomings. You don't have to be the child of an immigrant to appreciate the story, but it helps. Even if you aren't, the narrative is filled with raucous humor and laugh-out-loud moments that will make you glad you picked it up.
Thirsty Suitors has well-crafted RPG mechanics and satisfying combat, but its gleefully wild and colorful style and superb dialogue and characters are truly its biggest strength. It’s the type of game where you find yourself tempted to try every activity possible, either to see a loving ode to South Asian cultures, a well-written character moment or both. It’s an inspired bit of lunacy that still has a ton of heart at its core, creating an emotional journey in the end that still has a lot of room for more humorous bits. Jala’s life may be a mess at the start of the game, but cleaning up the mess leads to a grand amount of fun.
While slightly let down by the gameplay, it's still nice to see a refreshing take on the genre. If Outerloop can look back and improve its offerings with each release, I’d say this is one studio to watch out for in the future.
A great fun game with beautiful art style mixed with turn based comba and skateboarding.
The best part is how it revolves around South Asian culture & identity as well as a personal journey of relatable characters.
Still be prepared for cishet white conservative gamers to dunk on it as it obviously part of breaking through the narrow representation in video games. Sigh.
I don’t even know what to say about this game, other than the fact that it’s not boring, and that’s probably the main thing,The gameplay consists of 2 tiny locations, each of which we move on a skateboard with the most casual but enjoyable platforming - to talk to someone or go to the store to buy something or prepare Power ups on our kitchen, playing a simple turn-based QTE game, The mechanics of skateboarding itself is also not as simple as it might seem at first, you will gradually be given mini-tasks to collect all the icons in a certain time for a record or even to perform tricks, it`s can provide a small challenge for fans of the genre,The whole point here is in simple turn-based battles with your exes in the story or with your local suitors in an open location (for xp-farming), where you need to guess what type of “provocation” will evoke emotions in the enemy so that you can inflict more damage on him with special attacks, there is an also an ultra-move like “call mom” or aunt, and, naturally, you have 3 characteristics that affect the likelihood of success in attacks which are upgrading along with your level or automatically depending on your choices, and with the help of the above-mentioned “replayable” activities at the location, you can accumulate coins for all outfits, get the S rank everywhere, establish relationships with all the characters - this explains the price tag of the game, there is about 15 hours of “platinum” content here, personally, I completed the game for free on Xbox Game Pass in 6-8 **** animations seemed a little crooked to me, but the authors managed to make every move, every jump on a skateboard aesthetically pleasing, the overall “cel-shaded” visual are also not bad, so the game is simply pleasant to play, even if you are not interested in the plot about a bunch of evil, different-gender exes and finding out what you were guilty of, although sometimes there are funny lines in the dialogues, in general the battles here are more like an interactive visual novel, with good emotional voice acting by the way, and, well, a family drama about the difference between generations, a tyrant grandmother and sister`s faults is also present here , but more in the **** course, I expected a little different from the creators of the conceptually good “Falcon Age” (where we traveled around the world from 1st person with a falcon-pet), I can’t say that the result was something outstanding, but it`s definitely something unusual, including gameplay points, “Outerloop Games” made another good game, it’s worth a try if you’re ready for experimental projects (although the developers could do without mentioning vulgarity in places, authors, come on).
Putting aside how obviously "progressive" this game is, it is a competent Persona mimic that excels in no single way but is just barely entertaining and odd enough to keep playing. It is rough around nearly every edge, and the developers may have benefited from making a more focused game instead of throwing everything at the wall and hoping it would stick. I am not South Asian so I can't comment on how incredible of an experience it is for that demographic, but I will say that the family dynamic is the most compelling part of the game outside of the battle system. You won't miss anything essential if you skip this game, but if you have nothing else to do it is a decent choice to download on Game Pass.
So, I had read the synopsis and thought it could be interesting because of the Persona elements (turn-based, gray zones, dialogues decisions that matter etc). I could not be more wrong.
Basically, the woke tone ruined half of the game. Nothing against it if done right, but this is not the case here. Unlikable and overly arrogant protagonist, cheesy dialogues, it's just pure doctrination.
The other half was already ruined by itself. The turn-based battles are dull and slow (dialogues during it make this ever worse), the art design is uninspired and awkward, and the game has performance problems.
Nothing there is salvageable. Stay away from this stinky **** garbage.
I saw this game getting the "0/10 or 10/10" political reviews treatment, so naturally I had to download and check it out for myself on Game Pass and I played for a couple of hours...
Let me tell you, this game is a lot like a gender studies degree. Yes, the devs put a ton of work into it, and it's obvious at times, but it doesn't really equate to anything meaningful in the real world.. at least not to the general population.
It was an absolute chore to play, even just a couple of hours. I couldn't wait to get out and move on to something good. Skateboarding is so "arcadey" that it was becoming annoying. You can't even just cruise around and ollie. It was baaaad. The combat was so one dimensional, that I question why it's even in the game. It's chopped up with so much dialogue and the back and forth is so boring.. it's just like, why not skip it entirely? What is the point here? Of course, that would leave the game with not much else, as nothing else about it was really fun at all, definitely not the constant "relationship/ex partner" banter happening constantly.
I didn't get too far into the game to really speak on other features, but think that says a lot in and of itself. The whole experience was very foreign and not in a good way. In a forced and niche way.
I truly believe people giving this game a good rating have decided it's part of their personal belief narrative to just straight up lie and act like it's good because it is pushing the liberal stuff. Maybe they saw an article, a Reddit post, a negative review they didn't like and want to counter it.. IDK, but its all BS.
TLDR: This game is super niche and feels like a foreign multicultural romance soap opera for a teen girl that 9/10 people aren't going to really take to and most of the positive reviews are from liberal social justice warriors lying about this game. Everything happening in the game is a poor quality rip from other IPs. The only praise the devs deserve is the attention to detail in some general aesthetic designs and proper voice acting. The content choices are atrocious. I genuinely had a 1/10 time with the game. The only reason I am giving a 3/10 is because of the obvious effort from the devs, but they should really put their energy into something more appealing next time
