SD Gundam: Battle Alliance is a fun title that celebrates the franchise, delivering a solid and fun gameplay, specially in co-op, that manages to keep itself varied and engaging even after long hours of playtime. The shallow story and weak progression system limit its success, but it is a game that should appeal to long-time fans and serves as a good way to introduce younger players to the wonderful Mobile Suits.
Gundam fans and newbies alike are in for a treat with SD Gundam Battle Alliance, which delivers a really well designed action RPG, on top of homages upon homages to decades of the Gundam franchise.
Awesome game with tons of content, customization and a fantastic online component. The post-launch updates have improved the game in every way as well. One of my favorite releases from the last year.
SD Gundam Battle Alliance is for those fans who know the series very well. It is fast-paced mixed with role-playing elements but some aspects like the camera will not be to the liking of many. It will make us spend a lot of time improving our units and trying to get the one that is our favorite.
SD Gundam Battle Alliance ensures combo-centric, spectacular battle by adding the variety of close-up actions. But, the timeframe for 'just guard' or avoidance maneuver is too short to use them well. You will be able to experience close-combat action little by little after the second half of the game, when your level slowly rises from the repetitive gameplay.
While SD Gundam Battle Alliance features a ton of mecha to play and famous moments from throughout the franchise, the grind, spikes in difficulty, and a few other flaws might leave fans looking elsewhere for a nostalgia trip.
This game is a fantastic unexpected treat. Its the only game other than Elden Ring I’ve been playing. I tried the demo out and it was fun, had potential, but the Game is even better.
It’s very comparable to Dark Souls combat and also its Bosses ( Circle Dodge, trigger attacks etc and some Bosses that will have you tear your hair out) The game is very fluid, and each MS feels unique and different. Some glide like butter, others are like rabid beasts, and all have incredible moves right out of the anime. It feels great to take out Wing Zero and be tossing enemies up into the air and blasting them like Nappa, especially because the game doest hand hold you you literally create your own combos. The combat is so deep and the game forces you to use every tool and element at your disposal to succeed. Make sure you go into the tutorials as there are advanced mechanics you don’t wanna miss.
Even if you know nothing about Gundam this game is fun enough I would still recommend it.
Now it’s not perfect, the environments graphics could be better, and some stages feel similar for sure…but its obvious this is because all the focus and funding has gone into the Mobile Suits themselves. The music is all out of the Various Gundam Anime too and its all amazing. From smooth Jazz to 90s glory to present day scores.
I really hope they keep adding more dlc and that they take what they have made with this game and run with it for a sequel. Add bigger environments with better graphics etc. As for bugs in my 80 hours of playtime everything was smooth. Ive heard on other consoles that may not be the case but on PS5 it’s visually phenomenal, ray traced etc, with no hiccups.
The story has a lot to click through and there is a lot of jargon, but you can get the just of it while clicking through it pretty fast.
The feel of collecting different suits and trying them out/getting to look at them up close never gets old. Very useful if you paint Gunpla. There were also some surprises I didn’t expect in the game that rewarded my hard work and curiosity, so all in all even though it can still improve in a sequel, its a game changer for Gundam Games and so that is why I gave it a 10. Now if they can just bring PVP to go along with the PVE so I can start unleashing all my insane combos out on people already.
As a Gundam game, Battle Alliance is a very strong outing, very reminiscent of the Dynasty Warriors games. Combining Gundam canon, but including some twists to their respective stories, including enemies and allies from other timelines, is a great way to make these stories feel fresh. Unlocking new Mobile Suits open up new gameplay options. There are some quirks with gameplay that hold it back, including occasional camera problems, and very short defense timing for Perfect Guard, as well as a very dead online community and tough difficulty spikes around chapter 5, but it is worth it for Gundam fans.
Good-
Game's story and setup allows for it to pull from all eras of Gundam lore; incredibly compelling combat and boss fights, as well as loot and upgrade system; love letter to the Gundam property.
Bad-
Chibi look might be off-putting to many; game can get a bit grindy; the story itself is fairly trite.
Thoughts-
These issues aside, though, SD Gundam Battle Alliance is an excellent outing, and a game that holds almost equal appeal to everyone, regardless of how much they are a fan of the property it is based on. Whether you are looking for an ode to all things Gundam, or just a well designed and compelling action RPG, SD Gundam Battle Alliance might be exactly what you are looking for.
For fans, "SD Gundam Battle Alliance" has become a good game. The storyline is enjoyable and the numerous missions will keep fans of the franchise busy for a long time. All other people are already a bit overwhelmed with the plot and the presentation. The graphics come with familiar elements around the corner again and can convince especially fans on the new console generation. Those who would like to experience a different game should take a closer look at "SD Gundam Battle Alliance". For fans, the title should be a must.
Two main issues found with the game.
1. The camera angles were horrible. Affecting accuracy in certain fights, especially inside the cities.
2. While the suits were overly detailed. The environment, landscape, etc were pretty minimum, barren, empty and it felt like an unfinished, empty game.
SummaryIn SD Gundam Battle Alliance, Mobile Suits and characters from across Mobile Suit Gundam history take center stage in this all-new action RPG.
