Although there may be times throughout the game where you will feel as though things are getting repetitive and drawn out, the play gets changed up at the right times and gives you a refreshing perspective to keep you going.
Fantastic game with awesome graphic. And now there is a story as well, just like Doom III. Games like Quake I, Quake II, Doom and Doom II had only maps to complete, but back then it was the thing. When Valve saw the light of day back in 1998 with their masterpiece Half-Life with a great story. Other companies had to do the same. Story in game sells well. If it's a good story. Well said.
The single player campaign uses the old school twitch shooter style that is still enjoyable, but gets repetitive and is ultimately unsatisfying in these days of more sophisticated shooters.
I'm not happy with the online gaming, and watching it chunk-a-chunk on my screen at 640x480 isn't good either. But there is enough fun in the gameplay and the story is deep enough to keep you coming back.
Raven took all the good things first person shooters have been doing since Half-Life and Unreal...it works--sort of--but the end result is a bit messy nonetheless.
The Quake 4 we have is ultimately not the Quake 4 that was born of four years worth of development. There is just no way in hell. And from a developer this kind of game is appalling.
Although I love FPS, I have never been much of a fan of the Doom/Quake series (but I quite liked Doom 3 atmosphere and gameplay). But Quake IV was a real let down.
I kept pushing myself through it, not having much fun at all, and wondering "Why am I doing this? Why bother?"... but I did, hoping the game would end soon. Go figure. And when I finished, I was relieved!
It's not a bad game per se, it's just... meh. And hours of meh don't make for a great experience.
You just run around, kill monsters, find switches, go back (a lot), kill monsters again, same old, same old.
Graphics are good, but Doom 3 was way better and immersive; here there's no mystery, no atmosphere, it looks like just a lame excuse to shoot stuff.
If you don't need imagination and inspiration at all, and you just want to shoot and kill stuff, then you might like it - good for you ;-)
