Gotham Knights is up there with Elden Ring as a Game of the Year contender. Its fast, responsive, and action-packed combat is surpassed only by a narrative that had me glued from the very first cutscene. A must-play for fans of open-world titles, and an easy pickup for anyone invested with the Gotham Knights or DC Universe.
Gotham Knights stands in the shadow of giants, and while it doesn't necessarily stand as an equal, it's a valiant effort. There's clearly a lot of love and care put into the game, and while it doesn't hit every mark, it hits more than it misses. The only thing that really drags it down are some technical issues and a slight drought of unique open-world content to complete. It's a great attempt to figure out how you do Batman without Batman, and this title should scratch the itch of any Batman fan.
Gotham Knights narrate a very entertaining story with a well-written and endearing quartet of heroes. Its game mechanics work best when it stays linear. However, its open world makes the experience decline with how repetitive it becomes.
A worthwhile entry into the DC/Batman game series, Gotham Knights can be a fun experience in single-player or co-op with its strengths lying in variety and its four-Knight team. However, its confusing UI, repetitive stripped-back combat, and lack of stealth options leave it unable to reach the glorious heights of the Arkham games.
Don’t expect a successor to Arkham, slavish
to the memory of Rocksteady’s games. This 6
isn’t that. It is a good game in its own right,
despite some mistakes. [Issue#21, p.74]
An average city action that can't be broken even by competent fights and an interesting story with a unique villain. Gotham Knights is a time killer with boring activities in a pathetically dead city, terrible controls, wasted potential and a lackluster graphical presentation. The game feels like the work of tie-breakers who have to look up the word "fun" in the dictionary.
Gotham Knights is a lacklustre entry into the Batman mythos that feels like a major step back from what has come before. Whether it's the monotonous combat, subpar 30fps on console, lack of co-op incentives and strain it puts on the single-player experience or the fact that Gotham is dull and slow to explore, nothing justifies its existence. While its story might offer the occasional glimpse of something that could have been, it gives me no great pleasure in saying that Gotham Knights is my biggest disappointment of the year.
You all know the praise don't knock it till you have tried it. That is a great saying for this game everyone is giving it a zero just because of 30 fps, but if it were to have more then graphics would not be as good. It also has a pretty cool story and fun combat. This game I would recommend if you are looking for a fun game to play.
Intro: As the end credits started to roll, I told myself "well, this wasn't a bad game, but I spent too many hours into this." I had some fun during my 32 hours. There definitely were times when I was frustrated. I still think the reviews are harshly and misleadingly low, because there are many nice things here. Mind you, I have not played the previous batman games. So this review is not influenced by those past games.
The good: The martial arts on display in this game and the techniques used for the silent take downs are beautiful and satisfying to watch. Grappling and gliding are also frequent, and thankfully, they too, are satisfying to execute. The game is quite the looker. Gotham, its interiors, its caves, its main antagonists, and our 4 optional protagonists look awesome. Same can be said about the weapons and suits, they looked extremely cool and detailed. There is decent variety too. The soundtrack is decent. Very injustice-like, which is appropriate. strangely enough, the highlight was a pop song that played during a fight against prisoners (Livin' La Vida Loca if you're curious). And that smoothly leads on to the set pieces and boss fights. Because that was part of the Harley Quinn's quest line. Which was great. Freeze's quest line too was great (although he spoke less and it was not made clear to me what even were his intentions and motivations). Talia Al Ghul's quest line was entertaining and enjoyable too. I liked the writing for the Gotham Knights. Playful at times, sad at other. It was believable. There are loads of interactions between them at the belfry, in emails, and some during missions. As to voice performances, Harley and Alfred stood out. However, Talia having a London accent is weird, isn't she half Moroccan, half Chinese? The assassins speak Tamazight... oh well... I liked the investigative nature of the game too. Being detective is part of the job. It also adds more flavour to the game for us as players.
What could have been improved: A lot. alot of button mashing and spongey enemies despite the story being interesting. one of the biggest downsides is the bike aka the interceptor. the only positive i could give it is it has good steering. otherwise, it feels slow and tries to trick you by having wind effects on the sides of the screen, you have to be really close to it to get on it and you cant jump onto it from above, and worst of all, it then becomes redundant when you unlock fast travel. It also bizarrely bounces off of things, and you really have to push hard on ps5 controller to accelerate. poorly planned/optimized. the parkour and combat and co op are great. just a shame there is no actual jump button, it is semi-absent, only being present only near pre-determined places. I also like that the title screen reflects the skins you currently have equipped. story is fine, and there is a lot of voiced lines to flesh out the world and **** wokeness is forgivable but would have preferred not to encounter it still. tbh the game does feel a bit hollow and soul-less and i dont feel much of the love from the developers. i mean enemy npcs are all very similar and like clones, they dont even yell when they are on fire, you can't enter many buildings, npcs in gotham arent doing much etc. I like how everyone treats the gotham knights like nobodies, because relative to batman, they are. villains straight up show you no respect lol. and that makes sense, just as the amount of mourning and reminiscing that Alfred and the gotham knights do. having 4 heroes feels redundant, i played the whole game as batgirl. at least there is the option, but it makes cutscenes and the story a bit strange, since characters must speak generally so that it applies to all/any of the gotham knights. Would have been nice to call them to fights too. anyways, flying and combat and investigating and stealth were fun for me, which is the core of the game. it didnt feel too grindy suprisingly. loot system was not great and felt random and unsatisying to obtain.
74/100
*If you've played every Batman/Arkham game, this game is exactly everything you DON'T need. It is a game made for those who buy on Ali Express expecting the quality of the Arkham series that is purchased in the original **** experience of fighting and completing combos is very poor, it looks like an N64 game, bad mechanics and few fluids. Unattractive and very repetitive secondary missions.Getting around Gotham City is a rough experience, getting around on a motorcycle is boring. You can entertain if you are a fan of history, which is the only thing that ranks well for this installment, being free in the PS plus and in the Gamepass says a lot.Success, the graphics of the main characters and the city. Otherwise... it's a poor game that deserves a bad rating. If I had been part of the work team I would be embarrassed to deliver the project.
I am a huge fan of the Arkham series games and the world of Batman in general. I paid 35 dollars for this game while on sale and it feels like I paid too much. It looks and feels cheaply made in comparison to previous Arkham games I’ve loved. Everything about it feels like less; The visuals. The details. The UI. The movement and fighting. The wash and repeat of how you go out each night. The city and its emptiness. The repeated bad guy skins and audio. I’d rather replay Arkham Knight from 2015 again honestly. I really thought I’d appreciate this one with the discount I paid but it’s just not a good game. It’s as average as it gets and that’s a tragedy since the Arkham series was so great. Pass.
