The new team has some true blue Scooby-Doo vibes, and at one point literally set off in a 1970’s shag-carpet van as they chase answers on the mystery that launches the series. It’s a choice that feels natural to the setting and mostly works due to the strength of the young cast, though also comes off a bit earnest and on-the-nose for a franchise that has reveled in the meta-corners of genre storytelling over the past decade.
Right now, it’s more of the two of them feeling each other out, and how the very experienced and skilled Mary and her friends will train the newbie in how to keep themselves safe. ... This isn’t This Is Us, after all. But given how quickly the “Scooby gang” of this show has been established, The Winchesters is off to a decent, albeit familiar, start.
The last episode (Dec 6) was just what we were all waiting for. It's found its'style and storytelling pacing....guess they just needed Richard Speight at the helm to bring in those Supernatural vibes! I could definitely look forward to this show every week.
Perfectly cast, stunningly shot, and all around engaging. The 70’s setting feels lived in and the characters (both old and new) all feel fleshed out, with interesting dynamics between them and compelling histories I look forward to learning more about.
My one minor criticism—and it’s very minor—is that the pacing felt a little rushed in the pilot. Given that I could say the same thing about 90% of pilots which then lead into well-paced shows, I’m not really worried about that.
As a big fan of Supernatural who watched for all 15 years, The Winchesters is a welcome return to that universe. It’s clear that a lot of love and respect for the original series went into making the pilot. It really couldn’t be in better hands & I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.
Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly work the two-hander dynamic well enough to anchor the series on their own before it introduces its Scooby gang (complete with Mystery Machine). (The rest of the ensemble is hit or miss, as are the comic beats that come along with them.)
The durability of the format can be seen in “Supernatural’s” inordinate longevity, and there are references and callbacks to that show for those who celebrate. The principals here, though, are building a different kind of chemistry than that brotherly banter, and at least initially, it all comes across as pretty flat.
The Winchesters is an incredibly boring, lifeless prequel that’s unsure about who its audience is or even why it exists. It’s not so bad, it’s good; it’s not bingeable. Instead, The Winchesters is just… there.
Remember the cringe and terrible acting from season 1 supernatural? Same, but without any charm or intrigue. This is a poor to mediocre teen drama with a mild supernatural theme. It's like the past 15 years didn't exist. None of the lessons learned with the previous show were applied here. It's poorly shot and for the love of me, I couldn't figure why they've that that color correction choice. The pacing is absurd. Why spend time meeting and motivating the characters naturally when a random plot Deus ex Machina would do to force events forwards
I never really got into Supernatural. My ex was so adamant that I have to watch it that it felt more like a chore than anything. And by the time I did think about watching it, there was just too much of a time commitment. So this is from a non-supernatural standpoint. As another review pointed out. It feels like a teen drama. A boring teen drama. And the characters are so badly written/acted. At no point do I think that these people could fight their way out of a wet paper bag, let alone the supernatural. John, first shows up looking like he just came from brunch. Not the Vietnam war. The only way this guy was in a war is if he spent it riding a desk or crying in a trench. And he continues to come across as weak and soft. Then we have Mary. Oh she's the stong, independent loner in the leather jacket. Except that's where it ends. You can tell they tried to write her tough but she just never manages to sell it.
The rest of the team, besides being forgettable, are all cringy. I don't buy them as demon hunters for 1 second. Overall this is just a poorly written and cast show with very little going for it.
This does not live up to supernatural. This feels like a teen drama that tries hard to be supernatural. Everyone is extremely soft, and weak. They try to act "cool" and "stylish" but just comes off as annoying. I dont know if its because of the actor or the writing but John does not act confused at all. For instance How is John not "surprised" at finding out about demons and stuff. Instead he's just goes with the flow. He doesn't question how to pronounce exorcisms, he just knows it. He doesnt train to use a silver sword, he just "knows it". Dont give me, he's a soldier so he knows how to fight. What kind of soldier trains them to use a sword when guns are available? This just feels like another CW show unfortunately. i miss dean and sam :(
The Winchesters me ha decepcionado tremendamente.
