Rockstar have redeemed themselves and there's no need to return to the city after providing this compelling argument against automotive transportation.
If this game's concepts seem even remotely interesting to you, head out immediately to your nearest game store and slap your cash down. The single-player story alone is more than worth the price of admission, and the multiplayer is truly unique and will likely evolve into something very special as the community continues to grow.
This is so much more than a mere retooling of Rockstar's tried and tested open world formula – it's an artful take on a world long lost, an evocative paean to not only the Western genre but also to the beautiful expanse of the American landscape.
Certainly not without a few imperfections, Red Dead Redemption is almost unquestionably the best Western-themed game ever, with a great Old West story, an amazingly detailed and expansive landscape that most Rockstar sandbox games are famous for and overall engrossing gameplay that will keep gamers riding off into the sunset for dozens of hours.
In the end, Red Dead Redemption is going to please a lot of gamers who are simply starved for a new world to explore and the Wild West, even though the game takes place at the end of that era, is ripe for the taking.
I'm reluctant to give 10/10 because today it does show some age. But I'm trying to think back to when I played this 13 years ago (it's hard to believe it's been this long). 13 years ago, this was my absolute favorite game. I loved it so much that as soon as I heard about Red dead 2 I preordered it, which was the first game I'd ever preordered.
By todays merits i'd give it a solid 8/10. The only place it falls short today is the gameplay and other areas other the game are clunky.
It's a good Game, but not even close as great as rdr2, rdr2 beats this game in everything also including more of the 50% of the map of this game, this is an example of a work surpassed by his sequel and don't get me wrong I think for example that mgs2 is better than mgs3 or mgs3 is better than mgs4 or GTA IV is way better than GTAV but this is not the case, It lacks the nobility, the insane open world narrative, mature and the amazing slow pace of rdr2 that made clear that it's going to be a mandatory feature in next entries to come in the series, although the BEST thing of this Game is the ending of the story.
After reading all 330 of the mixed reviews I found not one of them mentioned the game's most glaring flaw. GJ ppl, it's no wonder gaming continues to improve at such an incredible rate. It's a sandbox game made by control freaks who put systems in the game that punish the player for doing anything more than bumping into an NPC. It invalidates the point of the sandbox genre. If GTA III, VC, or SA had attached a permanent character penalty every time you ran over a pedestrian, they would not have been popular games. RDR should not be a popular game. For example, out in the middle of nowhere with no other people around, a law officer chased an outlaw to get his bounty. I stepped in to help, shot the bounty, and in response both the bounty and the officer start shooting at me. So I kill both, incur a -200 'Honor' penalty, and game pop-ups messages telling me it's going to lock my out of quests and erase my save file if I don't start playing like a nice boy. It's pants on head stupid, it completely defeats the purpose of the sandbox genre, and removes all the fun from the game. This is less like an actual game and more akin to some kind of virtual training simulator for dogs, where the players are the dogs, being trained to do completely pointless and unrewarding things for no purpose that they have to do anyways because that's what the designers wanted. The entire game is designed as an anti-fun just follow instructions control freak's training exercise. It's basically an interactive cut-scene simulator, where every single moment and every event that occurs in the game is scripted according to what the developers wanted or did not want the player to do. It has almost zero actual entertainment value, and as noted, not a single critique on this site leads to the game's most obvious flaw and are all basically invalid or I wouldn't have left this review.
Can't do half the things you can do in a GTA game. Die when entering waist deep water. **** fast traveling system. Pointless awards from challenges. Riding a horse isn't nearly as fun as riding a car. Accidentally target someone and you get into a lot of trouble. Controls **** as if you're used to keyboard mouse. Can't tell friends from enemies in a gun fight.
SummaryDeveloped by Rockstar San Diego, as a follow up to the 2004 hit game Red Dead Revolver, Red Dead Redemption is a Western epic, set at the turn of the 20th century when the lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age. The story of former outlaw, John Marston, Re...
