The Outlast Trials is excessive and frantically enjoyable - but can occasionally tip over into frustration more than fear. [Early Access Score = 60]
Instead, it felt a little like Phasmophobia, a little like Dead by Daylight, and a little like that strange Hello Neighbor spinoff, Secret Neighbor. It’s like all of those things, but it’s not like Outlast. Not one bit. It feels ready to be another Twitch darling, with highly-caffeinated streamers screaming to their astonishingly large audiences, collabs aplenty, producing YouTube content for years. The Outlast Trials is possibly the most deranged the series has ever been, with plenty of smart ideas albeit quite sparse on content. [Early Access Score = 70]
Despite its focus on co-op, The Outlast Trials presents a strong early showing through its early access release. It runs well, has an interesting setting and story, and the co-op can be incredibly fun if you play it with the right group. The only downside is that jump scares might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If the developers manage to fix some of the problems I experience, add more content and polish their work, it may end up with a higher rating. But, as it stands, I have been entertained but not impressed. Some aspects are good and others are flawed. If you have a bunch of mates and want to play something unpleasant, this is something to keep an eye on. I leave the Early Access version with the hope that it will become a stable multiplayer spinoff. My rating is also somewhat justified by a disappointment that it is created for a different audience than the first and second versions, as I quickly realised that I was not as engaged with this in the same way as with its predecessors. The Outlast Trials is shaping up to be a fantastic co-op horror experience, albeit one that isn’t overly scary. An intriguing setup, well-crafted loadout systems and an emphasis on cooperation make it a grotesquely violent and appealing game, even in this early stage. The solo experience is however, as miserly as the inhabitants of this disturbed asylum, so plot your escape with others, or suffer the consequences. [Early Access Review]
The Outlast Trials is a unique cooperative horror game with a fantastic premise and some really memorable scenarios, but while the early access version proves the concept there’s a lot of work to be done to make those ideas pay off. Running around with friends as you hide from murderous killers and complete utterly insane (and sometimes too edgy for their own good) death games is paradoxically tense and hilarious, but the fact that the enemy AI is about as effective as a concrete parachute and two of the three levels share too much of the same DNA certainly leaves a lot of room to grow on.
