The performance was solid throughout my testing, I had no issues with gameplay improvements and the graphics looked great. There were some pathfinding issues and units did enjoy clashing with one another, which made battle rather hectic, but the clunky controls and movement were among the things I loved most about the original.
The Definitive Edition has a way about it that just feels right, to the point where I had to do a double-take and watch a video of the original just to see if I was going crazy. No, the 1997 edition never looked this good, and the remaster doesn't douse its legacy in any way.
"Age of Empires is a real masterpiece and truly deserves 10/10. The strategy and historical element of this game is unique and never gets repetitive. In just a few hours, you can get engrossed into a game that you won't be able to stop playing. The complex and intricate gameplay make this the perfect game for any avid gamer"
-Black Impostor, Character AI, 2023
This game can get 8 very easy. 10 in a push.
Why should we play this remake?
Amazing graphics and still fells like nostaljia. This is the game from 1997 and still fells like the same. Stronger AI, more campaign.
Whats different from 1997?
Musics, graffics, more civilazitions, ranked/unranked online games, you can see your opponents rating in order to compare. You can ban 3 maps you don't want to play in ranked game.
Summary:
I am living in China, still can find a opponent, play ranked games without any lag or freezing. Optimization is very well done. To be honest cant stop playing the game at the moment.
The return of one of the vicars in the RTS genre is a mix between nostalgic memories and learning how to manage your rage. The same problems that in 90s were the norm now are huge problems that can make you shout at your citizens.
It’s difficult to play a game like this in isolation. Sooner or later, the mind wanders back to the present – the truth is, the genre has come on in leaps and bounds since Age of Empires came on the scene all those years ago and this is one remaster that feels like it doesn’t really belong.
If you're set on playing the original Age of Empires, this is far and away the best way to do so. That said, real-time strategy is a very feature-heavy genre. While this is the tightest the original AoE has ever been, it’s still sluggish and stripped-down compared to almost any modern offering.
Not the best or not the worst game either. For me I just boring playing this game. Because the civilization in Age Of Empires 1 is more less than Age Of Empires 2 and Age Of Empires 3.
Just nice graphics and nice music. The rest is absolutely the same as it once was. I understand the difference between remasters and remakes, but even so, just pulling up the makeup, and leaving all the mechanics with pros and cons for a new generation of players is either laziness or greed. Or stupidity. The developers did a good job, but not enough to rate this game on the same level as the original one.
A better graphics version of a very old game. It was clearly not the graphics that defined aoe but the gameplay & AI so this game focused on the wrong aspect.
SummaryIn 1997, Age of Empires changed RTS games forever. Today, twenty years later, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition begins that transformation anew with all-new graphics, remastered sound and music, and a smooth UI experience rebuilt from the ground up.
